Internet & WiFi FAQs

No, the internet is a global network connecting devices worldwide, while Wi-Fi is a wireless technology that allows devices to connect to a local network, which can then connect to the internet.

All-fiber networks (fiber-to-the-home—FTTH) are built to connect homes and businesses to lightning-fast Internet connections. The fiber optic cables that make up these networks are the fastest and most reliable broadband technology and can deliver vastly higher bandwidth than traditional copper wires or wireless. Fiber optic cables are made up of thin strands of glass that carry information by transmitting pulses of light, which are usually created by lasers. The vibrations are turned on and off very quickly. A single fiber can carry multiple streams of information simultaneously over different wavelengths, or colors of light, enabling more robust video, Internet, and voice services. Fiber cables can transmit multi-gigabit Internet speeds compared to the mere megabytes typical of copper connections. Learn More Here: https://fiberbroadband.org/why-fiber/

If Webster-Calhoun were to experience an outage (un-planned or planned), there would be communication to our impacted customers. If you are experiencing issues at your specific location, please don’t hesitate to call our office and our staff can assist with troubleshooting.

If you want to test your Internet speed, visit: https://fast.com. Test results may vary slightly above or below your Internet’s plan speed due to device differences and how the test is performed. Generally, a computer connected via ethernet (wired) will give a more accurate and potentially faster speed test result compared to a cell phone connected via Wi-Fi.

No, a modem is not needed since our services are powered by fiber optics. Instead, an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) is installed, this is property of Webster-Calhoun and stays at the service location for current and future service connections.

Yes, a router will be needed if you want to connect multiple devices to the Internet or use Wi-Fi. Customers have the option of renting a Managed Wi-Fi Router from Webster-Calhoun or they can purchase their own. If purchasing your own router there are a few things to keep in mind: make sure the router is from a reputable source or brand, is dual bandwidth, the speed capacity is high enough for your needs, and the equipment can’t be a router/modem combination.
